BBC Radio 1 announce a huge summer shake-up (2024)

BBC Radio 1 have announced a huge shake-up in their schedule for the summer months, ahead of a bumper season of festival coverage which will dominate the airwaves.

Among the changes, Radio 1 Breakfast with Greg James will be extended to 11am from Monday to Thursday to allow more of his young listeners to wake up with him over the summer weeks.

Listeners will be treated to an additional thirty minutes of Greg's antics with even more humour and energy guaranteed to help them get through the morning.

Speaking about his extended slot, Greg said: 'Being on the radio is pretty much my entire personality so why not do an extra half hour a day for all those who can't be bothered waking up early for the Breakfast Show in the summer holidays.'

In other news, Radio 1 will provide the soundtrack to the hottest summer festivals, broadcasting live from Glastonbury, TRNSMT, Ibiza, Malta and Reading and Leeds.

It comes after the channel broadcast live coverage fromRadio 1's Big Weekend, Parklife and Download in recent weeks.

Radio 1 will deliver all of the most memorable moments from each festival directly to listeners, from exclusive backstage interviews to headline performances from some of the world's biggest artists.

Listeners can tune in live on BBC Sounds as well as on Radio 1 from Friday to Sunday from 1pm to 4pm for the latest festival updates.

Additionally, Sam McGregor and Danni Diston will cover Friday Early Breakfast, from 5am to 7am from July 5 until January 2025.

The duo will keep the seat warm until the next wave of presenting talent will take the reins and the slot will resume to its normal format dedicated to showcasing the very best new and emerging presenting talent.

Sam and Danni will host Friday Early Breakfast alongside Weekend Breakfast, on Saturdays and Sundays from 7am to 10am, with both shows broadcasting from Cardiff.

Later this summer, Radio 1 will also launch a number of new shows on the BBC Sounds Radio 1 Dance stream.

Arielle Free will host Radio 1 Dance Morning, which will launch on 15 July and be available Monday to Sunday.

Following the channel's coverage of Radio 1's Big Weekend last month, fans will be treated to plenty of action from this summer's biggest festivals (host Mollie King is pictured)

Danny Howard will present Radio 1's Dance Party Warm Up, a weekly show available every Thursday from 6pm to 8pm, while Pete Tong will curate his Essential History of Dance every Saturday from 7pm to 8pm,dedicated to telling the story of the Dance genre.

There will also be a new evening specialist series which will see Radio 1 Dance collaborate with key Dance music labels Defected Records, HE.SHE.THEY. and DnB Allstars.

Additionally, Connor Coates will present a daily playlist – Radio 1 Dance – which will come from Northern Ireland, playing the best new, current and classic Dance tracks, and Charlie Hedges' Radio 1 Dance Anthems will be streamed daily across afternoons.

It has also been announced that Martha will take over the station's weekly Tuesday night show, from 11pm to 1am,which was previously hosted by the late Radio 1 DJ Annie Nightingale.

Aled Haydn Jones, Head of BBC Radio 1, said: 'The summer months see a change in routine for our young listeners and as a station, it's important we acknowledge this and continue to cater to their needs.

'With that in mind, I'm pleased to introduce our new summer 2024 schedule which offers a variety of new shows and content as well as an extra thirty minutes of Radio 1 Breakfast! I can't wait to tune in!'

It comes as fans eagerly count down the days to this year's Glastonbury festival, with coverage set to dominate the BBC on both TV and Radio.

Performing this summer will be the likes of Dua Lipa, Coldplay and SZA, with Shania Twainplaying the legendary Sunday slot.

It marks the first time in the event's history that female acts have taken two of the three headline slots.

Other acts on this year's line-up include Brit Award-winning rapper Little Simz and Afrobeats star Burna Boy, making his Pyramid Stage debut.

Big names like LCD Soundsystem, PJ Harvey, Cyndi Lauper, Michael Kiwanuka, Janelle Monae, Paul Heaton, Keane, Paloma Faith, Olivia Dean and Ayra Starr will also be hitting the stage.

Thirteen-member boyband Seventeen are set to become the first K-pop band to perform on the Pyramid stage.

Heading up the Other stage will be IDLES, Disclosure and The National, with The Streets, Two Door Cinema Club, Avril Lavigne and breakout stars The Last Dinner Party also set to play on the festival's second-biggest platform.

Joining these will be Camila Cabello, Bombay Bicycle Club, Bloc Party and Confidence Man.
