The San Francisco Examiner from San Francisco, California (2024)

RATE CUT IN SAN MATED Controller Fred Beer yesterday presented the San Mateo County board of supervisors with a county tax rate of 1.238 per $100 of assessed valuation for 1952-53. The rate is expected to be adopted next Tuesday by the board. Beer said that although the new rate is 35 per cent less than last year's rate of 1.88, the new figure represents an actual decrease of only four cents because of the recent real property assessment adjustment ordered by the State Board of Equalization. The new rate will bring in 822,000, which is the amount to be raised by the general county tax for the record $12,279,185 total county budget for the coming year. Pick Defense Boss Early, Lovett Asks WASHINGTON, Aug.

19. (AP) Secretary of Defense Lovett proposed today that man elected President in November announce his selection new Defense Secretary at once, without waiting until he takes office. This would allow the incoming head of the Defense Department to sit in on the final phases of preparing the next year's military budget, Lovett said, and would give him a grasp of the Department's problems that otherwise might require a year of study. Norway Newspapermen Touring Country A group of Norwegian news reporters and editors arrived here yesterday on a nation wide tour sponsored by the Mutual Security Agency.

They expressed interest in the high American standard of living but, at the same time, wondered whether Americans weren't living too fast to really enjoy life. Birger Folke Boquist, editor of the Oslo Evening Post, Norway's largest paper, remarked; "You have to live fast here to enjoy everything you have." Boquist regretted that many Americans do not realize that Europeans cannot buy American products unless they receive the necessary dollars through sales: of European products.to Amer. ica. And Cas Brockmann, another Oslo newspaperman, warned that any threat to interfere with internal affairs of European nations could damage EuropeanAmerican relations. The group visited headquarters of the California State Federation of Labor yesterday morning, and had lunch with Harry Lundeberg, AFL Sailors Union secretary, at the Sailors Hall.
