Hey there, new to the forums so go easy! Lol!
Been browsing the site since before it was fanedits and up until a year or so ago I was downloading fanedits (the full dvd versions)!
I'm hoping I'm asking in the right place, if I'm not I'm really sorry!
Up until the birth of our son 8 months ago I was able to download fanedit dvd versions using Utorrent and then burning them using nero and/or dvdshrink!
Now, coming back everything seems so different and I feel I've missed something as I can only seem to download avi files now, using Utorrent!
Someone on Linktalk suggested using JDownloader and rapidshare, so I downloaded JDownloader. It came as a Winrar zip archive so I double clicked the exe file, set it up and started some links running! Only problem is that when I switch the pc off at night and back on next day the JDownloader program seems to have gone and I have to double click the exe file and start again, thus losing the downloads I'd started! :-(
What am I doing wrong and is there any other better/easier to use programs for doing this? I prefer to have the fanedits as dvds with all the menus and extras, but would happily settle for avis. Only problem being that a lot of them are not available this way!
Any/all help is greatly appreciated guys! And keep up the good work! :-D

2 things first off: you might wait more than a few hours for a response before posting again. and it also might help if you make the title something more specific (other than newbie question; I changed that for you).
- so to get to your question: I am not exactly sure whats going on. Did you actually install the software? or are you trying to run some standalone version? I just installed jdownloader myself, entered my rapidshare info, and have had no problems with it so far.

Have you tried NOT switching off your PC while it is downloading?
Just a suggestion.

well, it should be able to keep the downloads. I have shut my PC off during jdownloader downloads, and when I returned, it kept the info and downloads - note, I do have a RS premium account, so picking up on partial downloads is no trouble, but still even for a free user, it should still be able to go to the next one or start over

OP sounds like BS to me, too many conflicting statements for my liking.

I know what you mean: he has been on LT for days with similar kinds of questions. But his persistence and the fact that he didn't post 20 times in a day even before the rule was in place endeared him to me. I've been trying, but it's very hard to interpret the questions, let alone take them seriously.
BigP, what OS are you running and how long have you been using a computer? Also, stop being so shady, vague, and contradictory.

Guys, I really don't understand why some of you think I'm bein shady? :-(
This is a genuine question! I've never been a big downloader of files from the net, usually just surf looking for info!
I'm really sorry if you think I'm being vague or giving conflicting info but I'm really very genuine and looking for the easiest way to become a part of these forums! Someone pointed me in the direction of JDownloader and being a bit of a novie I'm having problems with it that's all!
I've beeen trying to download when I'm asleep and switch off my pc in the morning because I'm busy takin care opf my 8 month old! When I start up the pc later on JDownloader is nowhere to be found!
I'm running on Vista Home Premium and have been using a PC since secondary school 20yrs ago. I'm 36 6ft1 and in good health! Lol! Please trust me I only wanna get to downloadin these fantastic edits in their dvd form! Like I said before though if I can't then I will just have to settle for the ones that are available as avis.
Here is the link to the page I have dowloaded JDownloader from:
http://bluehost.to/file/WLIJkgT7l/JDown ... .4.936.zip
and I downloaded the bottom one, double clicked the winrar file and double clicked the exe file!
JDownloader started up fine and I added the rapidshare links they all started fine, but when I switched off and back on it was gone!
I REALLY REALLY REALLY am genuine guys and would really like your input on this so I can stop buggin you all and get to downloading! LOL!

hmmm, lots to say but no real information...
im sorry dude but you are epic fail.
EDIT:
So, i have nothing to do for a bit so lets go a bit more in depth.
you've been using 'puters for 20 odd years yet you are missing basic skills
you've been on LT but you have no idea what to do
you've been downloading torrents yet the concept of RS is causing you trouble.
and finally, anyone who uses the sentence
I REALLY REALLY REALLY am genuine guys and would really like your input on this so I can stop buggin you all and get to downloading! LOL!
is really missing a few sandwiches from their picnic if they think people will take them seriously.

I don't understand why I'm gettin all this hostility! I was told by someone on LinkTalk to join the forums here as they would be able to help?
Yeah, I been using pcs for 20yrs and have a grasp of the basics but am having problems with JDownloader. I've tried to be as precise as I can with what I'm having problems with but it seems you all think I'm at it or something!
I can't really see what purpose that would serve but it seems like no-one wants to help so I guess I'm gonna be left to figure it out for myself!
Thanks anyway guys and I'm looking forward to hopefully downloading some of your great work!

I can't believe someone who's been using computers for 20 years only has a basic grasp of them.
I've been using computers for 13 years and it made me a programmer.

Ok...there's a big difference between using them at work or surfin the net to using them for programming or downloading or whatever else! Like I said before I'm new to downloading through rapidshare using Jdownloader. That's where I seem to be having problems! :-(

BigP, sorry, I'm not accusing you of anything, in fact I was trying to change the tone from nomarch's hostility by vouching for you a bit. You have to understand that people are going to be incredulous though, since solving most problems is just a google search or two away. Please check the JDownloader resources and determine where you are downloading the files. They will be there regardless of whether JDownloader stays installed on you computer (which is confusing in itself). Computers can suck when you don't know what to do but there are lots of resources online. Try searching for your problem "jdownloader disappears on restart" or "jdownloader disappears on reboot".

rather blunt and cynical but no hostility intended. im more than prepared to give someone the benefit of the doubt or admit to being wrong but if you're not prepared to spend even a few minutes with google
for example
three video tutorials and a yahoo answers hit, and that was my first attempt.

well, to me it looks like you did never unpack jdownloader, BigP.
Are you launching it out of winrar?

BigP, I guess there are a couple of things I would like to add.
1. It doesn't need to be installed but you do need to extract the download and then run it.
If you were running it from within winrar, then your download links are in winrar's temp directory.
All you can do is search your computer for files with a "dlc" extension and if you find any, load them in jDownoader and make a backup container.
2. Add add a shortcut to jdownloader to your startup group so that it will run whenever you turn on the computer.
3. Whenever you add links to download, create a backup container. This way, if the links do not reappear on start up, then you can just load the dlc file and all the links will be restored. Just to be safe, delete the links to files that have already been completed.
