So what’s the secret to this unbelievably tasty sauce? Well to be honest there isn’t any. With a few home ingredients, which should be readily available almost anywhere, you’ll be ready to whip up a batch in next to no time. McDonalds Hot Mustard was originally designed for dipping chicken nuggets into but also some people use it for their french fries.

Lightly fried chicken with a mildly sweet and spicy dip has got our mouths watering thinking about it. The only downside is that it isn’t always available, so you may have no choice but to make McDonald’s Hot Mustard yourself.

How To Make McDonalds Hot Mustard

There are a few little things we are going to throw into the mix (pun intended) to make an authentic McDonalds Hot Mustard.

The first is letting the ingredients sit and complement each other. We recommend a minimum time of around 3 hours. As with most sauces, especially those involving spices, by letting them sit you allow them to soak in, mix and then release all of their flavor into the wetter ingredients.

You’ll notice that as you leave mustards (and this works with just about any homemade sauce) the texture and color will change, there will be less ‘flecks’ of spice and it will become just a little smoother.

How spicy you make your hot mustard depends entirely on your personal preference. The recipe has a couple of elements in amongst it that can be tweaked and optimized according to personal taste. We utilize both cayenne pepper and mustard powder to introduce heat to the recipe.

If you haven’t got Cayenne pepper then Chili powder will also do the trick, but depending on the variety you have available, it can be extremely hot so use sparingly and add more later on if you want something that will have your friends calling for the fire brigade.

Alternatively, for a more rustic mustard, finely chop a chili and add it to the recipe. Just watch out for the seeds!

Mustard powder introduces a different kind of heat. If you think about wasabi (which is in the same family as the mustard seed and horseradish) you should know that it gives a very quick and intense heat but also quite a lot of flavor.

So, if you are looking to tone the spice down, we recommend using the same amount of mustard powder and using the Cayenne as your thermometer, otherwise you might miss out on essential mustardy flavor.

The sweet element also has two sources that can be tweaked and altered according to personal taste. Firstly, we use sugar syrup, but again this can be interchangeable if you haven’t had time to go to the store. As reasonable alternatives we have tried this recipe with honey, and maple syrup. Whilst they did taste different, they were not unpleasant and were extremely tasty.

Homemade hot honey mustard… Now there is an idea for an alternative recipe. If you are into exotic cuisine you may very well have palm sugar which works just as well and has that slightly burnt-tasting caramel sweetness.

We also add sugar to the recipe. Whilst white sugar works the best, powder sugar, brown sugar or an extra spoonful of syrup will also add sweetness. If you are going to use an alternative remember that they may have different levels of sweetness, so put half of what you think you need into the recipe and then add more once you have given it a taste.

It is important to ensure that wet ingredients are mixed before adding the dried and powdered spices. The reason for this is that if you add the wet ingredients on top of the dry there is sometimes a tendency for them to form ‘clumps’. And if there is one thing that will spoil your experience of making your own McDonald’s Hot mustard, its when you bite into a congealed mass of cayenne pepper and mustard powder.
